Moodle Notes & FAQ

mission-moodle moodle network 1moodle

Moodle is our new system. We are getting a lot of questions about how it works. Basically there are assignments, which are submitted and individually graded by the online instructor, quizzes, again individually graded, and forum discussions which may or may not be graded depending on your instructor.

The forums are set up so that every time a student posts you will recceive an email. This feature in Moodle is to provide the sense of an "on campus" classroom discussion. If you would rather receive a complete digest of all postings just once a day, you just go to "profile" on the left side of moodle, and set up the option for "complete digest".

To post to the assignments, just click on the assignment, and then read it carefully, and click on "edit my submission" at the bottom of the page, it will open up a box, and you post your work in that box, and then click on "save changes". Each time you go back and edit and save changes it updates your submission

On the Forum discussions, click on the forum, then click on "post here" and click on reply, and then type in your discussion in the box, and click on "post to forum"

On the quizzes, if they are multiple choice, just mark your questions, and then click on submit. Please note that the questions are "shuffled" each time you enter, so if you open it up to copy and paste the questions, so that you can study the chapter and then answer them, and then post your answers to the quiz, make sure answer the correct question which corresponds to your answer

If you do not like receiving all of the posted "emails" from each student separately, you can "edit profile" and change it so you receive one complete digest every day with all of the student postings to forums. Remember the forums are not graded individually, but just at the end of the semester, as a total of 10% for class participation (an not on the content of your postings) - so feel free to discuss your ideas in each forum

Save Changes

A number of students treat the "save changes" when submitting an assignment, as if it were a word processor. Every time you click on "save changes" it submits your work to the online instructor. DO NOT DO THIS. Do it only once when you are complete. Instead word process your work in a word processor, you can click to save on that many times, then go ahead when your work is "Complete" and click on "save changes". We are all learning about these small details in using moodle.

please do not use the box in moodle as a word processor, since when you click on save changes it sends me an email as if you have completed the assignment. instead please use your word processor, then when your work is complete "copy and paste" to the moodle box, and submit just once. thanks.

Also please do not use the moodle assignment box as your "word processor" as lines run on and on, and it makes grading more difficult. Again please use your "word processor" on your computer, and then "copy and paste your work" to the moodle assignments page, and then "save changes"

Grading for Law Classes

Your final grade is computed based on percentages.

moodle does not allow grading more than 100 for each assignment. So, if for instance, a particular project is worth 300, or 600 points, etc. you will only see a total of 100, that means 100 percent of the total 300, or 600 points, which is then calculated as an overall weight (percentage) in your overall grade. Thus the project itself might be worth 15 - 25 % or more of your overall grade, even though you see 110, you should be able to see the total percentage at the top of your grades.

When you look at your grade, realize that the percentage at the end of the line is your final grade (only after all assignments and your forum discussions grades have been entered - they are not as of yet).

Second, you can see the weight percentages at the top of your grades page.

We will try to add some more notes under our moodle notes page as we learn together how the grading system works in moodle. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Please email if you have any questions.

Remember that Prof J. may not be your online instructor for a particular class. If you have another online instructor, he or she will enter your final grades, so please contact him or her as to any question about specific grades. I am only emailing to let you know the calculation of the grading system, and how it appears to work for now. Good Luck. Prof J. - 7/13/07
